RtR Chapter 9 Tears of an Angel

Senka stood in the second section, just behind Feyra, having come second in the last race. She stared at the floor, her ears vaguely twitching at the sounds of all the cars and engines around them, some howls and cheers of wolves around them in the audience. Senka trained her mind to block it all out as she stared, not daring to look at the pits, for fear she would see Lightning staring at her. She closed her eyes and tried to think about what Serenita said. Should she speak to him again? He had said some hurtful things though..... Senka sighed, looking up to see Feyra staring at her. Senka smiled weakly, receiving a frown in response.

"You know, you should probably speak to him..." Feyra began, receiving a snort from Senka.

"Not you too" She mumbled, looking down again. Feyra sighed a little, before deciding not to push it anymore. With the green  flag being raised, there was no longer any time to talk anyway. Within seconds, the flag flew down, causing the wolves to leap forward, tails streaming and tongues hanging. The wolves quickly formed in a line along the inside, keeping close to one another. Senka flicked her ears as a voice sounded over the radio.

"Keep it up Senka, make your move on the next corner, Feyra go wide like on the last one" Doc said, and she chanced a quick glance over, seeing only him on the Pit stand. She didn't know whether she felt disappointed or a little relieved. As she ran forward, she saw the next corner approach, when there seemed to be a commotion behind them. Senka looked over her shoulder to see Malik, yet again, trying to take out another racer. This time it seemed that Minus was his target, as he attempted to almost run him over. Plus had stormed over to where Malik had attempted to knock him down and snapped at Maliks face, causing him veer away. Senka and Feyra slowed right down, allowing Malik, Minus, Plus, Kadesh, Serenita, Chester, Zorru and Shiva to pass. Senka kept her eyes on all the wolves ahead of her, worried that something bad was on the horizon.

"What are you doing?? Get ahead! You had it!" Doc pretty much shouted, unable to understand her reasoning for slowing down.

"I don't know Doc.... Something doesn't feel right...." Senka said, pinning her ears back. Malik was ahead now. Maybe he would leave the others now. As Malik pulled ahead further, Serenita too ran faster, matching him pace for pace. Plus stayed close to Minus's side, growling at anyone who got near as they ran round the next corner. Chester and Zorru stayed behind Malik and Serenita. Feyra ran nearer to Kadesh as they both intently watched Malik, and Shiva ran outward slightly, more on her own. As Senka pulled ahead on Doc's instruction, another voice came on the radio.

"Don't push her Doc, she knows what she's doing" Senka's ears flicked. Lightning. She looked briefly to the floor again, seeing her paws eat up the floor. She frowned and looked up, to see Malik launch for Serenita. It all seemed to happen all at once. Malik snarled as he veered away, before leaping at Serenita, his jaws clamping down on her shoulder. She yelped, kicking out and hitting Zorru, who lost his footing and brought down Chester as he fell. Both the males thumped to the floor, their legs flailing as they hit the floor. Plus and Minus where the next to get hit, with them trying to leapt out the way, they got tripped up by the males and then too thudded on the floor, skidding away. Minus managed to slip away from the group as his paws gave out from under him, managing to catch Shiva of guard.

She growled as she skirted round the smaller wolf, only to be met with Malik, who had managed to throw Serenita to the floor, causing her to skid away. Senka growled as she leapt forward in aid of Serenita, as Kadesh and Feyra leapt forward too. Chester had managed to get to his paws, and ran in aid of Shiva, who had met Malik with full force and were now clawing, biting and and snapping. They both rolled over as Shiva attempted to bite at his face, at which his own jaws found her front leg and bit down, causing her to snarl and claw at his face and scrape at his belly. Chester leapt on Malik's back, causing his to try and throw him off, leaving Shiva alone. Chester got thrown off when Malik dived forward, ducking his head into his chest and throwing the large male's weight forward.

As Chester tumbled head over heels, Zorru ran to him, helping him to his paws. Kadesh was over by Minus and Plus by this point, helping him up when Senka and Feyra ran toward Malik. The race was now abandoned now, as the wolves each tried to fend off Malik as he turned his rage upon every wolf. Senka leapt at him, aiming for the top of his back with enough force to send him toppling over. She too tumbled over and landed on her side, coughing as she landed due to the dust that was gathering. Serenita had trembled to her feet, blood coating her fur. She limped forward before slumping down again. Senka looked to her worriedly before snarling, turning to Malik, who was also getting up. Senka continued to look at him and snarl as she got to her paws, slowly rising. Malik's eyes were trained on her too, as he snarled back. The wolves stayed silent, watching them all carefully. There was a silence that had fallen upon the arena, the crowd had gasped when the fight had broken out, and now, everyone was too afraid to say anything.

"Senka.... Please don't...." Lightning nearly whimpered through the radio, making Senka pause for a moment. It was in that time, that Malik decided to attack. He leapt forward, jaws wide, eyes hungry. Senka pinned her ears back, terrified. She knew she would have to fight back, but she was frozen. It was then, that as he reached her, and leapt to pin her down, another figure swept in and took him off his feet once again. Senka blinked several times, seeing that Serenita had managed to throw herself at him, causing them both to roll away, creating more dust to form around them. Serenita and Malik both coughed, the dust filling their lungs. Malik snarled as he snapped his jaws, getting up slowly.

"DAMN YOU....YOU STUPID WOLF!" Malik roared at her, Serenita squeezed her eyes in pain as she forced herself up, a snarl on her muzzle. She looked up to Malik and stood up slowly, straightening herself. She looked Malik in the eyes as he too stood up straight, both wolves snarling at each other.

"You've always had it in for me Malik, from the first day. I've always been the one standing in your way, i've always been the one that stands up to you" Serenita started, receiving a hard glare from Malik.

"I'll always be standing in your way. You will not TOUCH another soul, not while i'm still here" Serenita finished, turning to face him fully. Malik growled again.

"Well..." Malik started, beginning to chuckle.

"We will just have to take care of that!" And with that, he leapt forward, teeth bared and jaws open. Senka leapt forward too, until Serenita snapped at her.

"STAY BACK!" she barked, before jumping forward and meeting Malik face on. They twisted and turned, tearing, snarling, biting. Senka watched with fearful eyes, her heart thumping. This was so much more violent than anything. Gasps and cries of fear left the audience, race officials trying to get near. It was then tha Serenita bit his face, causing him to stagger backwards. He snarled, wiping the blood of his face, as Serenita fell to the floor, her breath short and her body bloodied. He waited a few moments before approaching her again. Malik stared at her, his eyes unforgiving. He coughed again, as she went to get up. He approached her, as the other wolves gathered closer, ready to intervene. Serenita snarled at them.

"Stay back, NOW!" She barked again, causing everyone to reel backwards. Everyone watched as nothing happened for a few moments, as both wolves stared each other down. Then Malik leapt forward again, pinning her down. He smirked, a gut wrenching smirk.

"You won't be a problem anymore" He chuckled, jaws wide once again, before throwing his head down, clamping his jaws round the white she wolf's neck and snapped them shut again. A high yelp was heard as he bit, and as fast as he had attacked, as fast as he had managed to pin her down against her will, he had her in his grip, squeezing as hard as he could. Within seconds, her struggling paws stopped, her body shuddering and her head finally going limp. Her eyes closed slowly as her breath left in a ragged fashion, her vision fading and doubling. Her hearing left her, only leaving her with a high pitch noise that echoed through her ears. Through her failing vision, she saw wolves leaping about her. Her general vision was now just white, the silhouettes of wolves surrounding her.

She felt some nudge her, but it felt far away, like she was somehow disconnected. Her eyes darted around, seeing less and less with every blink. She saw another figure approach her, and was met with deep blue eyes that she could just make out. The figure called her name, and she knew it was Senka. She felt her self smile, and though she couldn't hear herself, she spoke, though how loud she spoke she did not know.

"Don't blame yourself..." She managed to utter, as finally, the rest of her body felt cold, and she saw the shadows slip away, gradually, and the white took over, finally, before she closed her eyes, feeling herself slip away. Just a small sleep, she thought. She can just sleep this off.

"SERENITA! SERENITA PLEASE, COME BACK!!!" Senka shouted, she was standing above her mentor, her hackles raised and her heart thumping. She wanted to throw up. She saw the older she wolf look around, as if she couldn't see, and finally rest on her. Senka called her name again, tears pouring down her cheeks. Serenita seemed to want to say something, still looking at her.

"Don't.... blame yourself..." She managed to whisper, her voice hoarse and weak. Senka buried her face into Serenita's fur.

"Please...." Senka whispered, and watched as Serenita's eyes rolled over and her body gave a final shudder as her last breath finally left. Senka watched, her breathing hard and fast.

"No.... No no no NO  NO!!" Senka barked, as she tried to awaken the wolf. But there was no hope. The older she wolf was gone. Senka buried her face yet again into Serenita's fur and cried. The other wolves had managed to rip Malik away from Serenita and were now taking chunks out of him themselves before they were all dragged away by the race officials. A white tent was being transported to cover the white she wolf as cars raced onto the track, ambulances tore around the place, noise everywhere. Senka heard nothing. She had watched her beloved friend die. She cried and stayed with her until she felt herself being pulled away. She glanced round to see another race official using his tyre to guide her away. Her ears pinned back as she skirted backward, staying with her mentor.

"I-I can't leave her" Senka started, but the race official insisted she leave. The more she resisted, the harder the force became. Soon, two race Officials were prying her away. She tried to push forward, her claws raking along the floor.

"NO! I NEED TO STAY WITH HER!!" Senka screamed out, as she was dragged away. She was taken to another tent, where she broke down again. She curled up in the corner, sobbing, her heart feeling ripped to pieces. Her chest throbbed and her head hurt. Serenita was gone. Gone. And Malik had killed her. She felt a slight touch at her side and she glanced up between sobs, to see Lightning by her side. He touched her side gently with his tyre, his eyes full of sympathy. Senka paused for a moment, before leaning into him and crying some more. He soothed her, watching her carefully, as outside, the preparations were being made to move the broken body of the she wolf.

"You ready?" Kadesh said to Senka, rubbing her fur against Senka's. Senka nodded, looking to the floor. It had been two days since the death of Serenita, and the whole Stadium had gathered back. The racers all stood in a circle, cars and other wolves surrounds them, the whole Stadium full to the brim once again. But this time, a different atmosphere gripped them all. It was dead of night, midnight in fact. Before the racers, eight sky lanterns glowed, hovering just above the ground. The wolves looked sullen, staring into the small candles that lit the floating lanterns. Strip pulled up very carefully next to Senka.

"I would be honored if you started" He said quietly. watching her. Lightning was at her other side now, the wolves gathered around them. Senka stared at the lantern for a while, before reaching forward and cutting the string that held it down. She held it in her paws for a moment, before she let it go, watching it float into the air. She watched it leave, as slowly, one by one, the racers let the lanterns go, followed by every member of the stadium. Soon, thousands of lanterns lit up the sky, an orange glow surrounding them. Everyone watched in silence as they surrounded the place, before Senka lifted her head, a howl escaping her lips. One by one the wolves joined in, their voices tuned into one another as wolf song filled the air. The cars couldn't understand what was being sung, though the wolves were singing their very hearts out.

"Cover my eyes

And with those words echoed into the sky, the lanturns rose higher, right toward the heavens, where Senka was convinced that Serenita now resided.
